A couple of days ago, I posted a brilliant and beautiful animation of the “Drive” talk David Pink gave at the RSA into my tumblr feed. David talks about how money doesn’t motivate for cognitive tasks, but Mastery, Autonomy and Purpose do. I came across the animation after David Wood, co-founder of Symbian and fellow of the RSA tweeted about it himself.
What happened next? Friend and ex-eBay colleague Adrian Sevitz retweeted it. One of his followers, Will Critchlow of search marketing experts Distilled again retweeted it. And then legendary SEO-meister Rand Fishkin, CEO of SEOMoz retweeted and suddenly BOOM. The first I knew about its spread was a stream of seemingly random semi-abusive tweets from a total stranger:

The irony of a couple of SEO kings driving a massive traffic spike via social media hasn’t been lost on me. As I wrote about a few weeks ago, it’s the beginning of the end of search as the main conduit to content.
Thanks Sev, Will and Rand: you made it worth me setting up Google Analytics on my blog, if only for a few minutes of geekery poring over a couple of days’ worth of decent traffic stats. Thanks also to David Wood for pointing me to the animation in the first place.
I should also point out that the animation was created by Cognitive Media (not me, as some folk seem to have assumed. I’m nowhere near that talented).
